bogus users
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:28:51 AM »
Hello,

I have reCaptcha installed and I was wondering if anyone else has de same problem.

For the last couple of months I have been having weird new users registering on my site at a rate of three per week.

The suffix of their email address usually is .ru or @gmail.com.

Their passwords have weird characters like adak89EECi8cooejdoWW.

I wonder how they bypass reCaptcha, any thougths anyone?

Thanks

Inigo

I have the same thing. Those are bots. I do not know how they can bypass the captcha but they do and what's behind of all the registrations. I have between 10-20 bot registrations a day. When I try to register by my self with leaving the captcha empty I get an error:

Quote
The captcha wasn't entered correctly. reCAPTCHA said: incorrect-captcha-sol

So I think JEZ reCAPTCHA got somewhere a whole which allows bots to register.

Is this going to be fixed or do we have to look for a other captcha?

And btw. Why is your captcha looking different then mine?

Thx

Hello MadKing,

A few days ago I dowloaded this plugin and it has resolved all the problems regarding bogus users.

http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/authentication/7319

Try it out and see if it works for you. Since I installed it I had none!!!

Hope it helps,

Inigo

Inigo, thank you but the thing with plugins like that is, that they block IP's too and it does not know if it is a bots IP or one of your users IP.

I like to use captchas. They do not block IPs and therefore you will not getting complaints from your users/members. lol

I am waiting on the final release of this one:
